Loose seeds can be difficult to identify from a photo. The Fruit setting covers seed-bearing structures; include a pod or a parent-plant photo when possible.

How to use the seed identifier

Start with a clear photo, then compare the suggested names with the features you can see.

1

Upload or take a photo

Choose a picture from your gallery or use Take Photo on a supported phone. Focus on one specimen in good light.

2

Get possible matches

Select Identify This Seed. Compare the suggested species, match scores and scientific names.

3

Check the visible traits

Use the tips below to compare your specimen. Try another view when the first suggestions are uncertain.

Photo tips for seed identification

  • Photograph several intact seeds in sharp focus against a plain background.
  • Keep the seed coat and surface detail visible.
  • Try a separate photo of the pod, cone or fruit the seeds came from.
  • Compare the parent plant's leaves or flowers if loose seeds give uncertain results.

Seed identifier questions

Can this identify a loose seed?

A loose seed may not contain enough distinctive features for a useful species match. The tool can suggest possibilities, but a pod or parent-plant photo often gives a stronger comparison.

Why is Fruit selected on the seed page?

The existing identification engine uses the Fruit category for fruit and seed-bearing structures. There is no separate seed-only classification mode.

Can I identify seeds without knowing their size?

You can upload a photo, but size and origin are useful features to compare yourself. The tool does not measure a seed or establish its viability from the image.
