Photo tips for leaf identification

  • Keep the entire leaf in frame, including its tip, base and edges.
  • Use a plain background so the outline stands out.
  • Try the underside in a separate identification to show veins and surface details.
  • Photograph the attached twig or whole plant when several species share a leaf shape.

Leaf identifier questions

Can I identify a plant from a leaf alone?

A clear leaf image can suggest species, but some plants have very similar leaves. Compare leaf edges, veins and arrangement, and try a flower or fruit photo if those features are available.

Should I photograph the front or back of a leaf?

Start with a complete, well-lit leaf view. The underside may reveal useful veins or hairs, so try it as a second, independent identification.

Can I use a leaf already saved on my phone?

Yes. Choose Photo lets you select an image from your gallery. Take Photo opens the camera on supported devices. JPG, PNG and WebP images are supported.
